Ingredients

Makes approx. 6 burgers

  • 1 cup of rolled oats (125g)
  • about 1 cup of hot water (230-250ml)
  • half a cup of grated cheese
  • 1 small brown onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp dry mixed herbs
  • half a tsp garlic powder
  • 2 slices of bread, crumbed
  • salt and pepper to season
  • dry breadcrumbs or polenta, to coat

Method

  1. Put the oats into a mixing bowl and add the hot water. If using rolled oats add enough water to just cover the oats. If using quick oats add a bit less water, otherwise they will become sloppy. Let the oats absorb the water for about 10 minutes.
  2. Once the water has been absorbed, add in the rest of the ingredients, except for the dry breadcrumbs/polenta. Mix together until all the ingredients are well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into burger patties of your desired size, though 1.5cm thickness (0.6 inches) is a good size.
  4. Coat the burgers in the dry breadcrumbs or polenta.
  5. In a pan over high heat, add enough oil to easily coat the bottom of the pan. When the oil is hot, add the burgers. Depending on how big the burgers are, cook them for about 3-5 minutes each side. Add extra oil to the pan during the cooking process if the pan starts to get too dry.
  6. Once cooked, serve immediately. Perfect with fresh, boiled vegetables and gravy!
