Makes 4 serves

For crumble:

  • 90g softened butter
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup soft brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup plain flour

For apple filling:

  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or mixed spices

  1. Peel apples and cut sides off core. Slice into thin pieces.
  2. Place apples into pan on high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of soft brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of spices or cinnamon. Stir over heat for a couple of minutes.
  3. Turn heat down to low, cover pot with lid and leave to stew for about 5 minutes.
  4. Start on the crumble. Put dry ingredients into bowl and mix together. Add butter and use fingers to rub butter into dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  5. Place the stewed apples into the bottom of a small baking tray or oven-safe dish. Cover apples with the crumble mixture, pressing the crumble down gently so that it sticks together, then sprinkle some loose crumble over the top.
  6. Put the dish under the grill for about 4-5 minutes until the crumble on top turns golden and crunchy.
  7. Serve hot with ice cream – it’s essential!
